Presented by Courtney Price, Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center & Center for Applied Plant Sciences

What would you say if someone asked you if you eat DNA? Yes? No? I don’t know? Well, whether you are a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore – the answer is yes! DNA is found in all living things. So, whether you’re eating beans, bananas or bacon there is DNA in your dinner. Join the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center and the Center for Applied Plant Sciences for a demonstration of how to extract DNA from applesauce using common household items.

This program is ideal for upper elementary and middle school students. However, all ages are welcome.

The Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center is a global stock center focused on Arabidopsis thaliana, an important model system for plant science research. Our mission is to collect, reproduce, maintain, and distribute seeds, DNA, and other research resources for Arabidopsis and other related species. We send our samples around the globe, shipping more than 100,000 samples to over 80 countries each year. In addition, we run a variety of education programs for students, teachers, and the public.

The Center for Applied Plant Sciences supports interdisciplinary research aimed at unlocking plant science discoveries to solve complex problems. The center brings together researchers and scholars from seven colleges across The Ohio State University.
