ABRC offers science communication workshops for STEM researchers

The Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center is sponsoring a series of three science communication workshops open to researchers and scholars (faculty, postdocs, graduate students, research staff and broader impacts practioners) from all STEM disciplines at Ohio State. We may be plant people, but you don’t have to be to take advantage of these workshops.

Workshops will be facilitated by Courtney Price, ABRC Education & Outreach Specialist. Courtney has 17 years of experience with informal science education, and has received training in both the Portal to the Public and NNOCCI communication frameworks. Two sessions will be offered for each of the three workshops. Registration is free, but space is limited. Attendees do not have to attend all three workshops, and are welcome to select only those that are of interest.

Workshop #1: Finding Common Language

This workshop will focus broadly on how people learn and effective communication strategies for a general audience. Participants will begin to identify core messages related to their research, and explore potential audiences for science communication initiatives.

Session 1: 10/21/19, 9:00-12:00, 102 Rightmire Hall (West Campus)

Session 2: 10/30/19, 12:30-3:30, STEAM Factory (400 W. Rich Street)

Workshop #2: Crafting Your Science Story

This workshop will focus on best practices for translating technical expertise into accessible content for general audiences. Participants will begin to craft their personal science stories through self-reflection, discussion and role-playing.

Session 1: 11/25/19, 9:00-12:00, 102 Rightmire Hall

Session 2: 12/5/19, 12:30-3:30, STEAM Factory

Workshop #3: Developing Hands-On Activities

Visual demonstrations and hands-on activities make learning more interesting and memorable. This workshop will explore effective interactive activities that demonstrate science concepts for a general audience. Researchers will brainstorm and prototype ideas for their own simple demonstrations or activities for use in future outreach activities.
