Description:
Caulanthus amplexicaulis var. barbarae. Rare herbaceous annual plant restricted to an archipelago of serpentine exposures in the San Rafael Mountains, near the southern terminus of the outer Coast Ranges of California, USA. After collection in the wild, this line was inbred for multiple generations in the laboratory by selfing (single-seed descent).
Growth Requirement: Difficult to germinate. Germinates sporadically over time (bet hedging strategy). Better germination rate and synchrony can be achieved by 2 to 3 days of cold stratification treatment (at 4 C in the dark) in 10mM KNO3, 1mM GA3 and 1mM KAR1. After planting, best germination is in slightly warm conditions (28 to 30 C) in a 12-hour day/night cycle. Will grow in well-draining potting soil under conditions typically used for Arabidopsis and other cool season Brassicaceae.
