Description:
Insertional mutagen into introgression line Col:FRI (obtained from Rick Amasino) using vector pPZP201 modified to contain a gene for resistance to glufosinate. Insertion is within 10th (of 11) exon. Mutant was isolated from a population of T-DNA-mutagenized plants in a screen for plants with a cold-independent, early flowering phenotype. Mutant was backcrossed 5 times to Col-0 with final selection by progeny testing. Mutant retains resistance to glufosinate.
Growth Requirement: Homozygotes have reduced sterility at typical growth temperatures (22-24C) and above.

Phenotypes for homozygous vip4-1 mutants after 2-5 day stratification are the following: slightly early flowering due to repression of FLC; slight floral abnormality with sepals fringed with white and failing to enclose floral bud; variable fertility under standard growth conditions. Phenotypes are increasingly severe when plants are grown at higher temperatures (above 22 C).
