Defective phloem. High Na, K, and Rb accumulation in leaf tissue. Plants have short roots and are late flowering, both under long and short day conditions. Extended vegetative growth. Elongated reproductive growth and late senescence. Seed set is low, especially in early flowers. Loss of apical dominance. Plants retain excess starch in the leaves at night. The root meristem of nakr1-1 is smaller than that of the wild type. Xylem sap contains less potassium in the nakr1-1 mutant.
