Shoots fail to send appropriate long-distance signal of shoot iron status to the roots, resulting in iron deficiency over time. Iron deficiency leads to interveinal chlorosis, altered metal concentrations in the leaves, roots, and seeds, as well as low fertility due to arrested pollen and embryo development. These phenotypes can be partially rescued by iron supplementation.
